The volume also include substantial correspondence with Dr. Cotterill and his nephew, Arthur Cotterill, concerning possible publication of the history. The manuscript was never published.

Robert Spencer Cotterill, historian and educator, was born in Fleming County, Kentucky, in 1884, at the now forgotten village of Battle Run. Cotterill was one of the founding members of the Southern Historical Association and a member of the history department at the University of Louisville. In 1928, he joined the history department at the Florida State College of Women (now Florida State University).
